Abstract

The topic of the P.h.D Thesis deals with the question of the representation of the urban landscape, ranging from theories that try to define the deeper meaning of the word landscape, to the contemporary developments of the representation, in which the landscape idea is transposed, increasingly protagonist of virtual contexts and able to configure new urban scenes. The goal of the research project is to structure an operating plan that, through an experimental analysis methodology of the landscape survey, appears able to conducting to a credible and reliable representations of the acquired space. The morphological and perceptive complexity in which each urban landscape is configured, for its implications both in the sensible that in that immaterial aspects, directed towards innovative research aspects. These methods, through the communicative power of the image, would allow to acquire the relationships between the elements of the space, break down the complesity of those relationships and simplify them to reassemble in a more understandable message. Photography, applied to the study of the landscape, allows the inclusion of specifically procedures and the testing of the latest three-dimensional photogrammetry applications. These activities are constrain to the study cases in which is necessary to test the operational capabilities of the individual processes. The photographic image is the base for considerations on the latest image based applications, on the quickly and low cost acquisition systems. Photography can generate three-dimensional landscape that answer to the request of metric and quality reliability and of the context. About the different study cases, ranging from rarefied villages to a more complex urban systems, some representative portions have been analyzed and acquired through structure from motion methodology. For each variable of the landscape-detector-environment relationship have been specified all the possibilities of the actions, the activities and the methodologies tested to develop virtual systems. It is also necessary to understand the management and the dissemination of that informative system which, starting from the digital image, can provide useful applications to the different purposes of the survey. The research has been finalized to test the methods in which the three-dimensional systems obtained, through the separation of all the elements, are able to configure mesh surfaces system that can be managed on G.I.S. platforms. In this system, for each of the three-dimensional element of the model, can be associated different levels of information, defined by data model. The model, organized by vectorial system, becomes interactive and queryable, allowing to extrapolate metrics and geometric informations about the landscape, analyzing the mutual relations between the elements by two and threedimensional levels. It is also possible to questioning each part to analyze the level of preservation or the degradation level of the forming surfaces. The interactive space obtained is able to communicate information about itself, but also about what is around it, including the operator, starting to express an updated descriptive system of the landscape through this methodology, that is able to making the photography instrument as the starting point for a deeper research about the image of the place.
