The phenomenon of forgery of artworks and cultural heritage is inherent in the history of archaeology, artistic production, and art history itself. The relativity of its concept, the multifacetedness of its implications on past civilisations and contemporary society, and the multidisciplinary approaches necessary for its investigation are only some of the characteristics that can describe this phenomenon, intrinsic to human nature itself and its creative ability. The doctoral research under consideration investigates the structural elements of forgery (in its many variants), its historical evolution and its cultural, economic, and social implications, as well as its possible relationship with the professional activity of the contemporary archaeologist. The legal characterisation of the subject and the analysis of the current state of study and contrast of illicit behaviour led to the drafting of a proposal for a law for the protection of Art and Culture. Subsequently, the study focused on the related phenomenon of collecting, its extent, and implications with the production of fake objects: the analysis of the perception of these phenomena among civil society and cultural heritage professionals made it possible to verify the potential and limits of current protection instruments, as well as the structuring of new ones. The theoretical approach is thus harmonised with the practical development of the research, which focuses on the archaeologist’s multidisciplinary working methods for verifying the authenticity of a ceramic artefact. This way, the procedures for producing an expert opinion are analysed, as well as the continuous and necessary relationships between humanistic and technological-scientific diagnostics. The research was supported by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo in the framework of the call “Progetti di Eccellenza 2017”, as part of the MemO Project, “The Memory of Objects. A multidisciplinary approach to the study, digitalisation and value enhancement of Greek and South Italian pottery in Veneto”.
Il fenomeno della falsificazione delle opere d’arte e dei beni culturali è insito nella stessa storia dell’archeologia, della produzione artistica e della stessa storia dell’arte. Relatività del suo concetto, poliedricità delle sue implicazioni sulle civiltà del passato e sulla società contemporanea, multidisciplinarietà degli approcci necessari per la sua indagine, sono solamente alcune delle caratteristiche che possono descrivere questo fenomeno, intrinseco alla stessa natura umana e alla sua abilità creativa. La ricerca dottorale in esame indaga gli elementi strutturali della falsificazione (nelle sue molteplici varianti), la sua evoluzione storica e le implicazioni culturali, economiche, sociali, oltre alle possibili relazioni con l’attività professionale dell’archeologo contemporaneo. La caratterizzazione giuridica del fenomeno e l’analisi dell’attuale stato di studio e contrasto del comportamento illecito ha portato, poi, alla stesura di una proposta di legge per una sempre maggiore salvaguardia dell’arte e della cultura. Successivamente, la ricerca si è concentrata sul connesso collezionismo, sulla sua portata e sulle implicazioni con la produzione di oggetti falsi: l’analisi della percezione di questi fenomeni presso la società civile e i professionisti dei beni culturali hanno permesso di verificare le potenzialità e i limiti degli attuali strumenti di tutela, così come la strutturazione di nuovi. L’approccio teorico si armonizza così con lo sviluppo pratico della ricerca, incentrata sulle modalità operative multidisciplinari dell’archeologo per la verifica dell’autenticità di un manufatto ceramico. In questo modo vengono analizzate le procedure per la realizzazione di una perizia e le continue e necessarie relazioni fra la diagnostica umanistica e quella tecnologico-scientifica. Nata in seno al Progetto MemO, La memoria degli oggetti. Un approccio multidisciplinare per lo studio, la digitalizzazione e la valorizzazione della ceramica greca e magno-greca in Veneto, la ricerca è stata sostenuta dalla Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo nell’ambito del bando “Progetti di Eccellenza 2017”.
