Credo iam ut solet iurgabit.Pragmatica della lite a Roma.

Questa tesi ha come oggetto lo studio delle liti private nelle testimonianze letterarie latine. La ricerca ha seguito due principali linee di interesse: in primo luogo si sono esaminati i testi che forniscono una rappresentazione delle liti, applicandovi i metodi d’analisi elaborati dagli studi sull’impoliteness. In questo modo si è fornita una descrizione linguistica delle forme di espressione dell’aggressività verbale ricorrenti durante queste conversazioni conflittuali. In secondo luogo si è cercato di ricostruire la percezione culturale trasmessa dai testi riguardo a questo tipo di interazioni. A partire dalle occorrenze del lessico della lite in latino si sono quindi studiati descrizioni e commenti metapragmatici, che hanno consentito di reperire informazioni sull’etichetta di comportamento vigente in queste situazioni comunicative. Entrambe le linee di indagine sopra descritte hanno restituito un quadro omogeneo: i testi indicano una svalutazione delle forme eccessive di espressione dell’aggressività verbale nelle liti e di chi vi si lascia coinvolgere. My research is concerned with verbal and non verbal behaviour during private quarrels in ancient Rome. Its aim is twofold: as first, to offer a linguistic description of the expressions occurring in this kind of conflictual communication; as second, to attempt a reconstruction of the cultural code underpinning this kind of conflictual interactions. The theoretical approach that I apply to the Latin literary texts is to be framed in the realm of impoliteness theories: they provide methodological tools which proved to be the most suitable for a thorough pragmatic description of the speakers’s behaviour. In the first chapter I focus on representations of quarrels, in order to show the language use; in the second chapter I start from a lexical enquiry on the main Latin terms for quarrel, in order to gain further information about the speakers’s perceptions of this interaction. Both these proceedings point to the same evidence: Latin texts tend to show a negative evaluation of quarrelling.
