R.G. Boscovich (1711-1787): dall'Edizione Nazionale al personaggio nel suo contesto storico-culturale europeo

TITLE: R.G. Boscovich (1711-1787) the man: as seen in his European historical-cultural context through the pages of the Edizione Nazionale. Abstract: This work, encouraged from the opportunity offered by the Edizione Nazionale del- le Opere e della Corrispondenza di Ruggiero Giuseppe Boscovich (still ongoing in 2016), explores the writings of the “Dubrovnik” scientist (who trained and lived mainly in Italy) to trace a biography aimed at a popular undersanding but well do- cumented and exposed in part through his own words. It aims thus to fill a void; is adding to the various Italian nineteenth-century eulogies, updating the existing Croatian biographies and joining the numerous, but often partial, articles in English, Croatian, Italian, etc., resulting from the various conferences on Boscovich. In this dissertation I outline all the salient aspects of the man Boscovich: a Jesuit father, an astronomer, a mathematician, a physicist, a natural philosopher, a diplomat, a poet, skilled both in theoretical and metaphysical and in technical and practical issues. It is evident that Boscovich was a leading figure of his time, well received in major cities and European courts; witness to many wars and to the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773. His life is rapresentative of the eighteenth century and it is useful to approach through it topics in history of science and technology or in history in gene- ral, or in interdisciplinary work related to that period. A rich iconographic apparatus and an extensive index of names facilitates the contextualization of my biographical account. Si propone così di riempire un vuoto; si aggiunge ai vari scritti italiani ottocenteschi in forma di elogio, aggior- na le biografie croate esistenti e si affianca ai numerosi, ma spesso parziali, articoli inglesi, croati, italiani, etc., scaturiti dai vari convegni su Boscovich. Nella tesi met- to in luce tutti gli aspetti salienti dell’uomo Boscovich: padre gesuita, astronomo, matematico, fisico, filosofo naturale, diplomatico, poeta, versato sia su questioni teoriche e metafisiche sia su questioni tecnico-pratiche. Ne emerge con evidenza che Boscovich era personaggio di spicco della sua epoca, bene accolto nelle princi- pali città e corti europee; testimone di numerose guerre e degli eventi che portarono alla soppressione dell’ordine dei gesuiti nel 1773. La sua vita è esemplificativa del Settecento e si presta per approcciare argomenti di storia della scienza e della tecno- logia o lavori interdisciplinari e di storia in generale relativi a quel periodo. Un ricco apparato iconografico e un vasto indice dei nomi agevola la contestualizzazione del mio racconto biografico.
