The four decades during which Luigi Rognoni (1913-1986) and Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) corresponded was a period so rich of key events for the transformation of music’s historical and critical thought, that every single missive must be viewed as an essential and necessary piece to deeply understand this era. The aim of this work is to elaborate an additional contribution to the studies already conducted on the figure and work of Luigi Dallapiccola, establishing a relation with the most recent researches on Luigi Rognoni, a character which is well known for its many contacts with twentieth century’s leaders of Italian and international culture, but whose experience remains mostly hidden to the world of musicology. The thesis is divided into three parts: in the first part, the correspondence is contextualized and its characters are introduced throughout its chronological development; the second part hosts the letters exchanged between Luigi Dallapiccola and Luigi Rognoni and between the latter and Laura Dallapiccola, the composer’s wife. Both correspondences are enriched by a critical apparatus, which is constructed so as to provide the reader with the necessary informations to understand the context in which each letter has been written. Finally the third part is a more detailed and articulate investigation of the major issues that emerged from the correspondence.. In the appendix are collected letters, photographs, and other documents which refer to or were attached to the main correspondence.
