The subject of this study concerns the traffic, mobility and settlement in Roman times along the last stretch of the Po, between vicus Hostilia (Ostiglia, Mantova) and the southern branch of the Po (Po di Volano-Pado Vetere), and the river Secchia (Secula / Secies). The connection between Pado Vetere and Ravenna was secured by a channel, the fossa Augusta. In this study was adopted an interdisciplinary approach. Historical, legal, archaeological, epigraphic and topographic sources and geomorphological data were integrated with archaeometrical and palaeobotanic analysis and information from the faunal remains. The integration of data and the cross-dating character of the research represent an element of novelty for this branch of studies. The study has taken into account not only the goods object of trade, the production areas, the circulation of goods and the trade routes, but also the relations between land ownership and trade and between free trade and state monopoly, as well as the social and economic status of possessores and negotiatores, in order to delineate some guidelines and particularities of land management.
