This research intends to contribute to the study of Norman-Swabian Sicily through the investigation of the oldest diplomas of Catania preserved in the Tabulary of the Cathedral Chapter and the Tabulary of the monasteries of Santa Maria di Licodia and San Nicolò l'Arena. The subject of the investigation of the two collections, kept respectively at the palace of the Archbishop's Curia of Catania and at the Biblioteche Riunite Civica and Antonino Ursino Recupero, were forty parchments, dated between 1091/1092 and 1205. It was decided to investigate the papers within this chronological range for the reason that two events characterised the history of the two monastic funds: firstly, the foundation of the abbey of Sant'Agata, which took place at the end of the 11th century by Roger I, and then the abbey elevation of the priory of Santa Maria di Licodia, which took place in the first decade of the 13th century on the initiative of the bishop of Catania, Roger Orbus. The analyses carried out on the parchments, which first involved their recovery and then their transcription, were also a good opportunity to attempt to clarify the functions performed by Ansgerio and his successors during the Norman era. They, in fact, except for the brief interlude of Giovanni di Aiello, were simultaneously abbots, bishops and lords at the explicit wish of the Count. In this way, the superior of the Benedictine community in Catania not only had the task of managing the Abbey of Agatine and the Etnean priories, founded and endowed by members of the island's high aristocracy, but also had the task of administering the vast Etnean diocese and governing the cities of Catania and Aci. This research therefore has two main aims: firstly, to create a corpus of the oldest documentary sources preserved in the tabulari of Catania, paying particular attention to the dynamics of their formation, and secondly, to outline the multiplicity of powers exercised over things and men by the Etnean prelates.
