This Ph.D. thesis delves into examining the economic and demographic consequences of industrial crises. In particular, the objective is to analyse the role that the industrial decline has on the development perspectives of local economic systems. The thesis is structured into three chapters. In the first chapter, the main theoretical and empirical contributions on economic geography, spatial development disparities and convergence mechanisms will be reviewed, with particular attention to the changes that occurred in these phenomena from the end of the 1990s onwards. The second chapter deals with the impact of an Italian big plant closure on the economic outcomes and development prospects of the involved territory. Specifically, the crisis of the Antonio Merloni Group at the end of the 2000s in the Fabriano area (in the Marche region) will be considered. The analysis is carried out through the application of the Synthetic Control Method at the Local Labour Market level. In the third chapter, the relationship between industrial decline and internal labour mobility is explored in depth. An event-study setting is adopted to estimate the impact that industrial crises had on the internal migratory behaviour of the working age population in Italy.
