Unlike most regions of the island, the area located immediately south of the northern coast of Crete has not been systematically investigated until recent times. Sporadically explored by rescue excavations, the area known as Pediada has only recently gained more significant attention thanks to the discovery of a new palatial complex nearby the modern village of Galatàs. Specifically, the excavation of a new palace traditionally considered as the main seat of a centralized sociopolitical and economic power has fostered new questions about the trajectories of sociopolitical change both within and outside the region, challenging previous theoretical views related to the island political and social organization. Following this development, the main aim of this thesis is to collect and rediscuss all the fragmentary and poorly known data from the area to specifically address issues related to sociopolitical change during Minoan times. Due to the typological differences between survey and excavation data, a multiscalar approach based on different theoretical and methodological trends has been adopted to consider different spatial and temporal pieces of evidence within the same historical reconstruction. Within this approach, however, a specific focus has been directed to the understanding of Galatàs and its development through time because of its notable preservation and excavation record. In this respect, the presentation and analysis of a previous unpublished building known as Building 3/5 has been undertaken in order both to add new information and to challenge previous assumption put forward by the excavators. Altogether, this thesis is intended to be a new point of departure for the study of the Pediada as a proper analytical unit within the broader context of the island, a study which should nonetheless be undertaken by adopting a local perspective aimed to emphasize differences rather than similarities with other insular regions.

Abstract
Altogether, this thesis is intended to be a new point of departure for the study of the Pediada as a proper analytical unit within the broader context of the island, a study which should nonetheless be undertaken by adopting a local perspective aimed to emphasize differences rather than similarities with other insular regions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
