Modernismo 'Verde': Un'Analisi Ecocritica di T. S. Eliot

This thesis examines the works of Thomas Stearns Eliot through an ecocritical lens, exploring the interplay between modernity, nature, and spirituality. Structured into four chapters based on the Empedoclean elements (earth, water, fire, air), the study traces the journey from urban alienation to a transcendent harmony between the human and the non-human. Through poetry, prose, and drama, Eliot portrays a nature both endangered by urban degradation and teeming with regenerative potential. The thesis highlights how an ecocritical perspective unveils new insights, repositioning Eliot within contemporary literary and environmental discourse.

Questa tesi analizza, da una prospettiva ecocritica, l’opera di Thomas Stearns Eliot, esplorando l’intersezione tra modernità, natura e spiritualità. Articolata in quattro capitoli dedicati agli elementi empedoclei (terra, acqua, fuoco, aria), la ricerca indaga il passaggio dall’alienazione urbana moderna alla riscoperta di un’armonia trascendentale tra umano e non umano. Attraverso poesia, prosa e teatro, Eliot esprime un’ambivalente relazione con la natura: minacciata dal degrado urbano ma ricca di potenzialità rigenerative. La tesi evidenzia come l’approccio ecocritico possa rivelare nuovi significati, ricollocando Eliot al centro di un discorso letterario e ambientale attuale.
