Although the built environment and the construction sector are at the centre of contemporary debates on sustainable policies, the discussions remain at a quantitative level. This thesis is based on three years of research for the “PON - PhD on Green theme” and has been carried out in the central Italian province of Macerata. In an attempt to understand the current impact and transformations of sustainability on the construction industry and housing conditions, the focus is on two complementary dimensions: the houses and the construction workers. Following the promising reflections on technical objects proposed by Simondon, houses are studied as the dynamic result of overdeterminations – imaginaries and ideologies – and technicalities – technical procedures and building materials. To overcome an analytical tendency that considers objects as the result of the imposition of form over matter, houses are studied as a “total social artefact”. The analysis covers the period from the unification of Italy up to the present day, and sheds light on the ideological continuities – and discontinuities – that have transformed the surfaces of houses. This reconstruction shows the frictions between the individual, local and national levels over a medium-long period, and explains the multiple roles that these objects play in people's imaginations (e.g. home ownership, the search for the rural idyll, harmony with the environment, etc.). At the same time, considering only these ‘superficial’ elements it doesn't explain and underestimates the technical and material aspects crystallised in the houses. Moving on to the analysis of the construction workers and their industry, it becomes possible to understand 'how' and 'whether' sustainability is just an ideological element or not. Against a simplistic interpretation of these elements, the words, biographies and technicalities of the people and objects, encountered during the fieldwork, outline the theatre of individuations that is played out in the technogeographic context of Macerata. These pages are an attempt to narrate and highlight the political-economic dimensions as well as the technical and material ones.

Abstract
These pages are an attempt to narrate and highlight the political-economic dimensions as well as the technical and material ones.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
