Ark architecture : strategies of space suspension

Both ancient and contemporary, ark architecture presents itself today as a space within which to retreat, in which to suspend and evolve, to participate in a future release and challenge reality. The research, structured as a field of tension between a pending prologue and a destiny, reasons about the ark by questioning the suspension of use as an operative strategy. Starting from the interpretation of three projects, the Rocca di Sassocorvaro by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, the Museum of Pharaonic Boats by Franco Minissi, and the Collector Room by Massimo Scolari, the research proceeds by setting the genesis of the figure in the furrow of Italian architecture. It then questions the principle of necessity that binds the ark to its contexts, exposing the project to the test of the eternal. Coming to us from the sacred scriptures as a provisional paradise; put to work over the centuries by politics to build subjugation; always present in the adventures of science in the form of the machine of knowledge, the ark emerges from the great narratives – of the distant past and contemporary – as a space of salvation. A taxonomy finally defines it as a present architecture that by renouncing use, or by surviving it, can truly make itself available for refounding. Only by designing itself under the empty sign of a suspension can architecture become an ark, the ark still a cavity, its cavity a cosmogony, to make itself the gift of a new history: a brand new testament.

Antichissima e contemporanea, l’architettura arca si presenta oggi come spazio entro cui ritirarsi, nel quale sospendersi ed evolvere, per partecipare a un rilascio futuro e sfidare la realtà. La ricerca, strutturata come un campo di tensione tra un prologo in attesa e un destino, ragiona sull’arca interrogandosi sulla sospensione dell’uso come strategia operativa. Muovendo dall’interpretazione di tre progetti, la rocca di Sassocorvaro di Francesco di Giorgio Martini, il Museo delle barche faraoniche di Franco Minissi, la Stanza del collezionista di Massimo Scolari, la ricerca procede impostando la genesi della figura nel solco dell’architettura italiana. Si interroga poi sul principio di necessità che lega l’arca ai contesti, esponendo il progetto alla prova dell’eterno. Arrivata a noi dalle sacre scritture come paradiso provvisorio; messa all’opera nei secoli dalla politica per costruire sottomissioni; sempre presente nelle avventure della scienza sotto forma di macchina della conoscenza, l’arca emerge dalle grandi narrazioni – del lontano passato e della contemporaneità – come spazio di salvezza. Una tassonomia la definisce infine come un’architettura presente che rinunciando all’uso, o sopravvivendo ad esso, può mettersi davvero a disposizione per rifondare. Solo progettandosi sotto il segno vuoto di una sospensione, l’architettura può diventare arca, l’arca ancora cavità, la sua cavità cosmogonia, per farsi dono di una nuova storia: un nuovissimo testamento.
