Al-Makin Girgis Ibn al-'Amid as a Cultural Mediator. A Critical Edition of the Graeco-Roman Section in his Universial History (chapters 92 - 166)

This dissertation contributes to the extant literature in the field of Christian Arab historiography by presenting the first annotated critical edition of the section from Alexander the Great (ch. 92) to Heraclius (ch. 166) in the chronography of Ǧirǧis Ibn al-'Amīd al-Makīn (1206-1293). The project also includes a study of the edited text organized in six short chapters. Chapter one provides an updated overview of the author's biography in the light of new evidence from the edited text. Chapter two integrates new findings regarding the manuscript tradition, and presents the updated stemma used for the edition. Chapter three presents the discrepancies among the recensions, in terms of contents and chronology. Chapter four provides a survey of the sources used by the author to describe the first centuries of Christian history. Chapter five is devoted to an in-depth study of the sources used for the biography of Alexander the Great. Finally, chapter six analyses the reception of the work among Muslim historians in particular al-Qalqašandī and al-Maqrīzī.

La presente tesi contribuisce agli studi di storiografia arabo-cristiana medievale mediante la realizzazione della prima edizione critica commentata della sezione dedicata alla storia ellenistico-romana e bizantina della cronografia di Ǧirǧis Ibn al-‘Amīd al-Makīn (1206-1293). Il progetto di tesi include inoltre sei brevi capitoli dedicati allo studio del testo editato. Il primo presenta un aggiornamento sulla biografia dell'autore alla luce delle nuove informazioni rinvenute. Il secondo propone una revisione della tradizione manoscritta dell'opera e lo stemma aggiornato utilizzato per l'edizione. Il terzo offre un'analisi delle principali differenze tra le recensioni dell'opera in termini di cronologia e contenuto. Il quarto presenta un'indagine sulle fonti del racconto dei primi secoli della storia cristiana. Il quinto illustra le fonti utilizzate dall'autore per comporre la biografia di Alessandro Magno. Infine, il sesto approfondisce il ruolo di Ibn al-‘Amīd nella trasmissione di informazioni riguardanti la storia del patriarcato di Alessandria d'Egitto agli storici musulmani al-Qalqašandī e al-Maqrīzī.
