Cyberbullying Behaviours and Risky Behaviours among The Italian High School Students

Cyberbullying is an important public issue with serious consequences on the well-being of adolescents. This project aims to examine the phenomenon in Italy, focusing on a sample of students aged between 15 and 19, representative of the reference population. Specifically, the focus is on describe cyberbullying prevalence and characteristics and analysing a) the association between cyberbullying and the consumption of psychoactive substances, both legal and illegal, b) the association between cyberbullying and behaviour that could potentially lead to addiction and c) the association between cyberbullying and other risk behaviours, such as violent behaviours and social withdrawal. The main objective is to contribute to an in-depth understanding of how cyberbullying can be linked to other behaviours and characteristics of adolescents, in order to develop targeted and effective intervention strategies. Data shows that cyberbullying is a widespread and growing phenomenon in Italy, especially after COVID-19 pandemic. Significant gender difference emerges regarding both prevalence and cyberbullying characteristics. There are significant associations between cyberbullying and relationship difficulties as well as other risk behaviours. The results suggest the importance of targeted preventive interventions in schools to improve risk awareness and support the psychological well-being of the students involved. Il cyberbullismo è un importante problema per la salute pubblica con gravi conseguenze sul benessere degli adolescenti. Questo progetto si propone di esaminare il fenomeno in Italia, concentrandosi su un campione di studenti tra i 15 e i 19 anni, rappresentativo della popolazione di riferimento. In particolare, l'attenzione è rivolta a descrivere la prevalenza e le caratteristiche del cyberbullismo e ad analizzare a) l'associazione tra il cyberbullismo e il consumo di sostanze psicoattive, sia legali che illegali, b) l'associazione tra il cyberbullismo e i comportamenti che potrebbero potenzialmente portare alla dipendenza e c) l'associazione tra il cyberbullismo e altri comportamenti a rischio, come i comportamenti violenti e il ritiro sociale. L'obiettivo principale è quello di contribuire a una comprensione approfondita di come il cyberbullismo possa essere collegato ad altri comportamenti e caratteristiche degli adolescenti, al fine di sviluppare strategie di intervento mirate ed efficaci. I dati dimostrano che si tratta di un fenomeno diffuso e in crescita in Italia, soprattutto dopo la pandemia COVID-19. Emerge una significativa differenza di genere sia per quanto riguarda la prevalenza che le caratteristiche del cyberbullismo. Esistono associazioni significative tra cyberbullismo e difficoltà relazionali e altri comportamenti a rischio. I risultati suggeriscono l'importanza di interventi preventivi mirati nelle scuole.
