In recent years, the debate on sound in phenomenological, epistemological and ontological terms has been revived to the extent that a new disciplinary field has been defined: the sound-studies (Pinch & Bijsterveld, Erlmann, Ihde, Kapchan). In the field of classics this debate has found fertile ground in the broader and more ambitious project of redefining a history of the senses in the ancient world as emic as possible with regard to the cognitive and sensory dispositions of the ancients themselves (Butler & Purves, Gurd). Bringing together perspectives from different disciplines (media theory, cultural anthropology, phenomenology, neuroscience), this doctoral dissertation consists of two sections. The first is the semantic analysis of the lexicon of war cries and noises in the Iliad and the Odyssey. This phase of the work was necessary to test the heterogeneity, the variety of meanings and the formular structures in which the lexicon itself is embedded. The second part of the work revolved around the commentary of several sections of the two poems in which this lexicon turns out to be particularly functional in defining narrative structures, characterizations of characters and internal references. Furthermore, we reflected upon the role of the lexicon mentioned above and, more generally, of the auditory dimension within the dynamics of oral performance and the constitution of structural metaphors and metonymies involving the sense of hearing (Lakoff & Johnson).
