Digitalization represents a fundamental lever for Italian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the national economy and play a key role in the growth and resilience of the country's production system. In an increasingly globalized world, digitalization emerges as an essential pillar for the internationalization and competitiveness of SMEs. The adoption of digital technologies enables companies to overcome traditional limitations related to economic and operational resources, facilitating access to international markets and the creation of global networks. Through tools such as e-commerce, digital marketing, and advanced management platforms, SMEs can optimize processes, enhance interactions with international customers and partners, and quickly adapt to the ever-changing market demands. In this context, digitalization is not just an opportunity but a strategic necessity to ensure growth, resilience, and competitive success in a constantly evolving economic landscape. This thesis aims to explore how the adoption of digital technologies can contribute to improving the competitiveness and efficiency of SMEs, facilitating their access to international markets and strengthening their resilience in an increasingly challenging global economic environment. In a scenario dominated by technological transformations and continuously evolving market dynamics, the research will investigate the opportunities offered by digitalization to break down barriers to internationalization, optimize operational processes, and create new growth opportunities. Italian SMEs, often characterized by a lean organizational structure and a strong connection to their local environment, face significant challenges such as limited access to financial and technological resources, as well as the need to bridge the digital gap compared to European and global competitors. Particular attention will be given to the analysis of digital tools, such as e-commerce, digital payment systems, advanced logistics, and the use of digital marketing platforms. If strategically adopted, these tools can serve as pathways to improving international visibility, personalizing offerings, and simplifying access to foreign markets. The research will also explore the barriers hindering the adoption of digital technologies, with a specific focus on the lack of digital skills, resistance to change, and difficulties in accessing dedicated financing. Through an analytical and integrated approach, this thesis aims to offer practical solutions and innovative strategies to promote the digital transformation of Italian SMEs. The importance of a digital ecosystem that fosters cooperation among SMEs will be highlighted, enabling them to share resources, skills, and know-how, creating synergies that strengthen competitiveness and innovation in the global market. The ultimate goal is to outline a strategic framework that not only supports SMEs in their digitalization journey but also enhances their competitiveness and sustainability on a global scale. The research aims to provide practical, evidence-based recommendations useful for entrepreneurs and business leaders, with the intent of building an Italian entrepreneurial ecosystem capable of successfully facing future challenges and seizing the opportunities presented by digital transformation.
