This doctoral research aims to thoroughly investigate the relationship between psychophysical well-being and athletic performance, with a specific focus on Italian football. In a context where performance is traditionally associated with technical and tactical variables, this study seeks to restore centrality to the subjective dimensions of the sporting experience, exploring the role of psychological, relational, and motivational factors in shaping competitive performance. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, structured on two levels: a quantitative component, based on the analysis of sports statistics extracted from the Wyscout platform, and a qualitative component, involving semi-structured interviews and self-administered questionnaires. The total sample consists of 102 football players, divided into three groups active in professional and amateur clubs across Serie C, Serie D, and lower-tier leagues. The results highlight a positive correlation between perceived well-being—measured through indicators such as emotional balance, personal satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation—and athletic performance, with significant differences between players reporting high levels of psychological well-being and those experiencing stress, anxiety, or motivational disconnection. Notably, players with higher well-being scores exhibited greater consistency in performance, fewer fluctuations in individual statistics, and more minutes played on the field. However, the research also identifies certain methodological limitations, including the modest sample size, the lack of longitudinal data across multiple seasons, and limited access to performance statistics for amateur players due to restrictions inherent in the Wyscout platform. Despite these constraints, the study represents an initial exploratory attempt to model the well-being–performance relationship systemically within the Italian football context. From an applied perspective, the findings suggest the need to implement structured tools within football clubs for monitoring players’ psychological well-being, alongside emotional training programs and career development support. Further avenues of development include the use of advanced technologies—such as wearable devices, artificial intelligence systems, and neurophysiological measurements—to enhance data collection and support a sustainable performance model centered on individual care and long-term athletic health. In conclusion, this dissertation seeks to move beyond a purely technical-athletic view of sports practice, promoting a performance culture that recognizes athlete well-being as a fundamental and enabling component for achieving stable, durable, and qualitatively meaningful results over time.

Abstract
This doctoral research aims to thoroughly investigate the relationship between psychophysical well-being and athletic performance, with a specific focus on Italian football. In a context where performance is traditionally associated with technical and tactical variables, this study seeks to restore centrality to the subjective dimensions of the sporting experience, exploring the role of psychological, relational, and motivational factors in shaping competitive performance.
