The scientific activity of the PhD focused on the AAL (Active and Assited Living) framework, and in particular on its application on the home-automation field. The activity was mainly directed towards developing wireless (ZigBee-based) devices to monitor the activities of the daily living at home, and their connection to a local server. Furthermore, it has been implemented the capability of identifying the user triggering the sensor, by exploiting the communication between the environmental devices and the wearable device previously developed in the Lab. Moreover, it was developed a system named CARDEAGate, able to monitor the crossing of a door or of any predefined point of passage, and to identify the user crossing it. The system has been developed in the framework of the AAL European Project Helicopter, in which the candidate was actively involved. Afterwards, it was possible to carry out a first analysis of the data gathered during the project, coding some scripts to automatically find some meaningful patterns in the activities of the users. The research activity during the period spent abroad was focused on the effects that lack of sleep has on balance, and in particular on gait quality, in the framework of fall-prevention in the elderly.
