The present work is an essay in commentary on the sixteenth book of Res gestae of <i>Ammianus Marcellinus</i>. This commentary was written from a primarly philological and literary perspective. We have tried in particular to highlight and explain the Ammianus' choice of words and syntax, and some peculiarities of his style. The vocabulary has a dense pregnancy: not infrequently, beyond a superficial reading, you can find at second level nuances of the text in which Ammianus seems have placed his real thoughts. Still, the sections specifically †˜julianic' stand out for the high stylistic register. Much attention has been dedicated to facies †˜sound' of the text, particularly to the sound figures and to the clauses.
