My thesis is an attempt at a theoretical description of plot twist as a narrative device in fictional prose narrative. In the first three chapters, I provide a definition of plot twist and an account of the cultural function it fulfills in Western contemporary narrative. Some characteristics of plot twist, such as the strong axiological connotation of plot twist endings and the balance between the breaching and the confirmation of narrative expectations, can be interpreted as cultural mechanisms that allow for the statement of social norms and rules of thumb. The second main focus of my thesis is an attempt at a taxonomy of the narrative techniques through which plot twist is achieved. A narratological and reader response approach allows me to isolate the specific technical devices which make it possible for the writer to manipulate readerly expectation by concealing and then revealing information (chapter 4 and 5): I focus extensively (chapter 6) on a specific case study, the novel Fingersmith, and its screen adaptation The Handmaiden, in order to examine the intermedial implications of plot twist technique. The final chapter (chapter 7) is a discussion of the evolution of plot twist as an organisational principle for narrative meaning in English High Modernism.

Abstract
The final chapter (chapter 7) is a discussion of the evolution of plot twist as an organisational principle for narrative meaning in English High Modernism.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
