The thesis offers an institutional, political and social portrait of Lycia during the period of Roman rule. A historical profile follows the major events in the region, from the emergence of the koinon in the late hellenistic period, up to the tetrarchic age. The profile privileges key junctures, which help to understand Lycia's special relationship with Rome and certain institutional and social changes. The second chapter is devoted to institutions, both on a federal and on a civic level. Particular attention is given to the deliberative organs of the koinon and of the poleis, in an attempt to trace continuities and ruptures in the political practices during the first three century of the empire. The role played by federal structures in areas such as taxation and the administration of justice is a key aspect of Lycia's special status within the Roman provincial system. A final chapter investigates the self-representation strategies of local elites and the features of their political engagement, also in light of the phenomenon of multiple citizenships and the spread of Roman citizenship.
