Wooden crucifixes between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: a corpus in Rome and Lazio.The first part of the PhD thesis presents an introduction to wooden sculpture studies in Rome and Lazio, focusing on wooden crucifixes. In the second chapter a historical and geographical context for the city of Rome and for the three regions where the works are distributed: Campagna-Marittima, Sabina and Tuscia. In the third section, cases of the tradition in Rome of the representation of the crucified Christ. In the fourth part, insights starting from the legacy of Vasari’s Vite for wooden crucifixes: sculpture and polychromy; the active use of Crucifixes in the ‘teatro della misericordia’; the iconography of naked Christ; the use of metal nails; the Roman relic of the Titulus Crucis; the sculpted Crucifixes with painted background; the artists’ signatures; the processions of the 14th century with destination the city of Rome. At the end of the thesis a catalog of 87 Crucifixes (works of art from the end of the 12th century to the mid-16th century). Many unpublished works and many Crucifixes from the most important basilicas in Rome.
