Abstract

Aim: the objective of our study was to assess the clinical effects and anal pressures variations after extracorporeal magnetic stimulation in patients with fecal incontinence.
Methods: 26 patients affected by fecal incontinence (18 female and 8 male) were enrolled. The patients underwent a five-week corse of twice weekly, 20-minutes sessions. At the beginning and at the end of the treatment, Wexnerࢠs test for incontinence and anorectal manometry were performed. All patients were re-evaluated 6 and 12 months after treatment to assess long-term results.
Results: the patientsࢠmean age was 55.55 years (range 43-67). All patients completed treatment with no adverse reactions. The Wexner scores showed to be reduced from 12.70 a 5.7; anal pressures increased in comparison to resting from 47.2 cm H20 to 52.12; squeeze pressures increased from 85.32 to 105.3 cm H2O and cough pressures changed from 96 to 115.3 cm H2O.
Conclusions: Analysis of our data showed a significant decrease of incontinenceࢠs score and a improvement of quality of life in most patients treated. We observed a clinical improvement but not an increase of basal anal pressure; we reported a positive correlation between the clinical improvement and the increase of maximal squeeze pressure and cough pressure.
