The thesis analyses a crucial period in the Vietnamese history. While we know almost everything about the first (1946-54) and the second Indochinese war (1964-75), the French-Japanese co-habitation in Viet Nam, which ended with the 1945 Revolution, did not raise any particular interest among Western scholars. Nevertheless, the research began because of the dissatisfaction towards the analyses and the conclusions some Western scholars presented. Nobody found the reasons of the military and social victory of the communists in the changes impressed to the Indochinese Communist Party (ICP) by the Conference of Pac Bo (May 1941). The origins of the massive popular support, which enabled Ho Chi Minh and its organization to keep the leadership of the country for decades, lie in the period between 1941 and 1945. This is the hypothesis verified by the thesis. The research studies the organization of the consent and the military strategy carried on by the ICP from 1941 on. Both these aspects have been analyzed from the point of view of the "subaltern", that is the eyes of the Vietnamese people during that period. A comprehensive research has been conducted at the CAOM (Centre des Archives d'Outre-Mer) in Aix-en-Provence and at the National Archives nr. 1 in Hanoi. Moreover, several documents, some of them unpublished, have been consulted at the Museum of the Revolution and the Institute for the History of the Vietnamese Communist Party in Hanoi.
