The doctoral thesis, "Toward an Idea of the Ninfa", reconstructs the development of the "Ninfa florentina" project undertaken by Aby Warburg and André Jolles between 1900 and 1901. Two letters serve as the "touchstone" of this research, which seeks to analyze the significance of this foundational moment in the formation of the Nymph, a central figure in Aby Warburg’s thought. The research is structured as a diptych. The first part, dedicated to the two letters and a thorough study of unpublished materials related to the project, aims to reconstruct the process of its development and the evolution of Warburg’s thought during these two years. This section concludes with an analysis of the three lectures Warburg delivered in 1901, proposing the hypothesis that what has traditionally been understood as the "failure" of the Ninfa florentina is, in fact, a redirection toward a study culminating in these lectures. The second part of the diptych, comprising the final chapter, is devoted exclusively to the evolution of the Ninfa concept in Warburg’s thought, analyzed through the lens of these unpublished materials. The chapter presents the analysis conducted in the first part, where, through an exhaustive study of the sources, it explores the function of the Ninfa as both a methodological figure and a theoretical companion to Aby Warburg's thought. In this chapter, the study leverages these sources, which, alongside Warburg’s Fragments for Expression, progressively outline the evolution of the Ninfa figure in Warburg's thought from his early years up to Jolles's Epistola prima, and subsequently the pivotal moment of Warburg’s encounter with Ghirlandaio's Ninfa in 1900-19001. The thesis also includes an appendix of nearly two hundred pages featuring the unpublished materials in German and their Spanish translations. These materials serve as the true starting point for the investigation, which seeks to shed new light on Warburg’s studies of the Ninfa.

Abstract
These materials serve as the true starting point for the investigation, which seeks to shed new light on Warburg’s studies of the Ninfa.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
