Car dependence represents a major barrier to achieving sustainable, safe and fair mobility systems and constitutes a complex challenge where personal and contextual factors interact. This thesis develops a comprehensive framework to advance its conceptualisation and assessment, combining regional-scale spatial analysis with individual-level perspectives. The integration of these different perspectives emphasises key gaps in conceptual clarity and operational assessment of car dependence. The findings show its significant spatial heterogeneity and highlight the limitations of purely numerical approaches, with car dependence acquiring different meanings across territories and individuals. The implications underscore the need for place-based, multidimensional approaches to address this pressing issue, leading to more equitable and context-sensitive strategies in mobility transitions.
La dipendenza dall’automobile costituisce un ostacolo centrale alla realizzazione di sistemi di mobilità sostenibile, sicura ed equa, nonché una sfida complessa in cui si intrecciano fattori personali e contestuali. Su queste basi, la tesi propone un quadro concettuale e metodologico che integra l’analisi spaziale su scala regionale con prospettive a livello individuale, evidenziando le principali lacune di chiarezza teorica e di valutazione operativa. I risultati mostrano una significativa eterogeneità territoriale e sottolineano i limiti di approcci esclusivamente quantitativi, rivelando come la dipendenza dall’auto assuma significati differenti tra luoghi e persone. Le implicazioni evidenziano la necessità di approcci multidimensionali e contestuali, capaci di orientare strategie di transizione verso una mobilità più giusta e sensibili alle specificità territoriali.
