Adopting a practice-based approach that interweaves theoretical reflection with direct experience on case studies and experimental projects, this dissertation investigates the liminal nature of amateur film archives, questioning the functions they may fulfil within the contemporary cultural context. The first chapter presents the theoretical outcomes derived from field research, archival practice, and a review of the relevant literature—including a discussion of the definitions of “archive” and “amateur film”—and leads to the formulation of the concept of the metamodern archive, developed within the broader theoretical framework of metamodernism. The second chapter illustrates the fieldwork that informed the previous considerations, focusing in particular on the practices and projects of two major institutions: the Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia – Home Movies in Bologna and the Cinémathèque de Bretagne in Brest (FR). Finally, the third chapter—which also serves as the conclusion—presents the experience of the laboratory designed specifically for this dissertation: the AR.C.A. project, a collection initiative and proto-archive (ARchivio Cinema Amatoriale Catania) dedicated to gathering and studying amateur film materials from the Etnean area. In this context, the practices and theories developed in the preceding chapters were put to the test, alongside several methodological proposals inspired by the formulated definition of the metamodern archive.
Con un approccio practice-based, che intreccia la riflessione teorica all’esperienza diretta su casi studio e progetti di sperimentazione, la tesi indaga la natura liminale degli archivi di cinema amatoriale, interrogandosi sulle loro funzioni nel contesto culturale contemporaneo. Il primo capitolo presenta gli esiti teorici ricavati dalla ricerca sul campo, dalla pratica archivistica e dalla rassegna della letteratura – includendo una riflessione sulle definizioni di “archivio” e di “cinema amatoriale” – e approda alla formulazione del concetto di archivio metamoderno, sviluppato a partire dalla cornice teorica del metamodernismo. Il secondo capitolo illustra le indagini sul campo che hanno condotto alle considerazioni precedenti, descrivendo in particolare pratiche e progetti di due istituzioni di rilievo: l’Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia – Home Movies di Bologna e la Cinémathèque de Bretagne di Brest (FR). Infine, il terzo capitolo – che funge anche da conclusione – restituisce l’esperienza del laboratorio pensato appositamente per la tesi: il progetto di raccolta e proto-archivio AR.C.A. – ARchivio Cinema Amatoriale Catania, dedicato alla raccolta e allo studio di materiali filmici amatoriali nel territorio etneo. In questo contesto, le prassi e le teorie sviluppate nei capitoli precedenti sono state messe alla prova, con l’aggiunta di alcune proposte metodologiche derivate dalla definizione di archivio metamoderno.
