This research investigates the transition of agri-food systems towards configurations that are more sustainable for the environment, and just and healthy for people. The work develops an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology that integrates complex systems theory, the use of energy systems language, and quantitative modeling, as well as qualitative empirical field research, focusing particularly on agroecological farming systems and farmer networks in Sicily (Italy) and Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). Field research and modeling practice were conducted to explore and understand (1) the complex structures linking agroecological practices, human labor, and local ecological knowledge; (2) their role and value for the sustainability of agricultural and food systems; (3) the implications of structural constraints for the sustainability of agri-food systems; and (4) the transformative actions to overcome them. The proposed approach focuses on the value of local knowledge and the potential of non-linear physical-based models in the fields of agroecology and sustainability sciences. It demonstrates the ability of the language of energy systems to capture dynamic principles that govern the self-organization of agri-food systems, support participation through forms of action research, and identify leverage points for systemic change.

Abstract
It demonstrates the ability of the language of energy systems to capture dynamic principles that govern the self-organization of agri-food systems, support participation through forms of action research, and identify leverage points for systemic change.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
