The thesis analyses the conspiracies and, more broadly, the opposition to the principes from Vespasian to Commodus from a coherent perspective based on the notion of the Principate as a systematically dynastic form of government and as Akzeptanzsystem. Instances of dissent are analysed through a comprehensive study of literary, epigraphic, numismatic, archaeological and artistic sources. Particular focus is given to the prosopographical investigation of the dynastic and family components, as well as the ideological elements, of conspiracies and instances of opposition, in order to understand how the evolution of the Roman Principate also led to an evolution of dissent against it, and of the constant need of the emperor to reflect on his own role.

Abstract
The thesis analyses the conspiracies and, more broadly, the opposition to the principes from Vespasian to Commodus from a coherent perspective based on the notion of the Principate as a systematically dynastic form of government and as Akzeptanzsystem. Instances of dissent are analysed through a comprehensive study of literary, epigraphic, numismatic, archaeological and artistic sources. Particular focus is given to the prosopographical investigation of the dynastic and family components, as well as the ideological elements, of conspiracies and instances of opposition, in order to understand how the evolution of the Roman Principate also led to an evolution of dissent against it, and of the constant need of the emperor to reflect on his own role.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
