This doctoral thesis presents the critical edition of Información y curación de la peste de Zaragoza y praeservación contra peste en general, a sixteenth-century treatise by the Sardinian physician Juan Tomás Porcell, situated within the broader context of Renaissance medicine and the theoretical and practical reflection on epidemic disease. Although the work has previously been subject to reproductions and editorial initiatives, it has hitherto lacked a comprehensive critical edition systematically addressing its textual transmission, as well as a thorough study clarifying its key concepts and significance within the medical and literary culture of the period. The preliminary study contextualises the treatise within its historical, political, social, and cultural framework, examining the Spanish Crown from the Catholic Monarchs to the early Habsburgs, the sixteenth-century medical and healthcare system — with particular attention to hospital structures and pharmacy — and the plague epidemic, which profoundly affected demographic and public health dynamics in early modern society. The critical edition, the philological core of the work, adopts a historical-philological approach articulated through editorial criteria and a critical apparatus recording significant variants and emendations. The study examines the therapeutic, pharmacological, and care practices described in the treatise, underscoring their value as testimony to Renaissance healthcare culture. The edition provides an established text accompanied by a note on the text outlining the methodological choices adopted, offering a basis for further historical, philological, and scientific research. The dissertation contributes to Spanish Renaissance philology, medical philology, and the history of medicine by recovering a neglected source and reassessing its role in the transmission of early modern medical knowledge, while supplying tools for the study of Renaissance medical and pharmacological terminology.

Abstract
The dissertation contributes to Spanish Renaissance philology, medical philology, and the history of medicine by recovering a neglected source and reassessing its role in the transmission of early modern medical knowledge, while supplying tools for the study of Renaissance medical and pharmacological terminology.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
