This PhD research addresses the issue of climate change by exploring the potential of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for sustainable urban development. Through a comprehensive systematic literature review, the study aims to identify and evaluate the multiple benefits of NBS, including their natural, societal, and economic impacts. The research emphasizes the importance of collaborative governance, stakeholder engagement, and participatory approaches in the implementation of NBS. The empirical component of the study involves a case application within the VARCITIES Horizon2020 project, focusing on the pilot city of Castelfranco Veneto in collaboration with Eurac Research. Utilizing qualitative methodologies, the research will engage citizens through design thinking, surveys, and digital technologies to co-implement NBS. Additionally, a framework for assessing the social impacts of NBS will be developed and applied to one or more pilot cities, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including the Social Return on Investment (SROI) method. The research aims to provide insights and practical recommendations for public administrations and urban stakeholders to enhance climate change mitigation and participatory design applications in cities. Dissemination of findings will be achieved through publications, conferences, and workshops, contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable urban development and climate resilience.
