For multinational companies, adhering to supranational product compliance regulations is becoming increasingly important and challenging. Customers and authorities are setting stricter requests and requirements that can be met only through transparent and smooth communication throughout the end-to-end supply chain. Without compliance with regulations, the risk of business interruptions caused by sales stops and recalls or by production outages due to blocked components is unacceptably high. Currently, validated criteria and documented practices for Supplier Product Compliance Risk mitigation (SPCRM) within the supplier lifecycle management (SLM) are not documented in the literature. This work proposes to fill this gap by developing a reference framework for managing Supplier Product Compliance Risk (SPCR) along the SLM stages. The business context will be constrained to convergent product industries, e.g., construction or industrial equipment and tools. The following research questions will guide the research: - RQ1: How do Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMS) manage Product Compliance requirements along the supplier lifecycle management stages? - RQ2: How to manage Supplier Product Compliance Risk in the supplier lifecycle management process? - RQ3: How to implement Supplier Product Compliance Risk Management in the supplier lifecycle management process? This research will be developed by adopting a multi-method approach. Exploratory multiple case studies are conducted to complement the literature review for critically analysing the scientific and industrial state-of-the-art in answering RQ1 following a Grounded Theory approach; experts’ workshops are conducted to further extend insights and validate the findings. RQ2 and RQ3 will be investigated by adopting a Design Science Research approach (Peffers et al., 2007) as the researcher is already part of the industrial context supporting this research and she is an actor in the process being studied. The research process is divided therefore into three main phases: - Phase 1: Conceptual framework development. In order to define what is the state of the Art on SPCRM along the SLM, the following methodologies are applied: o Literature analysis via a mixed approach (Systematic Search and Conceptual review) to collect existing academic knowledge. o Multiple exploratory case studies to integrate the findings from the literature analysis via pattern identification and analytical abstraction from a cross-case analysis. o Experts Workshops to further extend the insights from industrial practices and validate the proposed conceptual framework - Phase 2: Development of Supplier Product Compliance Risk Mitigation (SPCRM) method. Leveraging and building on the results of Phase 1, Supplier Product Compliance risk is modelled and a method to assess SPCR and support risk treatment-related decisions is proposed, following a Design Science Research approach. - Phase 3: Development, improvement, and Pilot application of the proposed method in a Pilot company. This work contributes to science by defining and framing SPCR conceptually within the SLM process and by developing a method dedicated to its management. It also contributes to practice as companies can better understand the nature and components of SPCR, and they can refer to a validated method with tools for minimizing the potential risk along the SLM phases.
Per le aziende multinazionali, rispettare le normative sovranazionali sulla conformità dei prodotti sta diventando sempre più cruciale e complesso. Clienti e autorità impongono requisiti sempre più stringenti, che possono essere soddisfatti solo attraverso una comunicazione trasparente e fluida lungo l’intera catena di fornitura. La mancata conformità comporta un rischio elevato di interruzioni operative, come il blocco delle vendite, richiami di prodotti o fermi produttivi causati da componenti non conformi. Attualmente, nella letteratura non esistono criteri validati né pratiche documentate per la gestione del rischio di conformità dei prodotti da parte dei fornitori (in questa tesi definito come Supplier Product Compliance Risk Management - SPCRM) all’interno del processo di gestione del ciclo di vita del fornitore (In questa tesi definito come Supplier Lifecycle Management - SLM). Questa ricerca si propone di colmare tale lacuna sviluppando un framework di riferimento per la gestione del rischio di conformità dei prodotti provenienti da fornitori (SPCR) lungo le fasi dello SLM. Il contesto di applicazione sarà limitato a settori industriali convergenti, come quello delle costruzioni o delle attrezzature e utensili industriali. Le seguenti domande guideranno la ricerca: • RQ1: Come gestiscono gli OEM (Produttore di apparecchiature originali) i requisiti di conformità dei prodotti lungo le fasi dello SLM? • RQ2: Come gestire il rischio di conformità dei prodotti da parte dei fornitori nel processo SLM? • RQ3: Come implementare la gestione del rischio di conformità dei prodotti da parte dei fornitori nel processo SLM? La ricerca adotterà un approccio multi-metodo. Per rispondere alla RQ1, casi studio esplorativi sono stati condotti a complemento della revisione della letteratura, seguendo un approccio di Grounded Theory. RQ2 e RQ3 verranno affrontate attraverso un approccio di Design Science Research (Peffers et al., 2007), poiché la ricercatrice è già inserita nel contesto industriale di dell’azienda che supporta questa ricerca e partecipa attivamente al processo oggetto di studio. Il percorso di ricerca si articola in quattro fasi principali: • Fase 1: Analisi dello stato dell’arte sulla gestione del rischio di conformità dei prodotti da parte dei fornitori (SPCRM) lungo lo SLM e sviluppo del framework concettuale. o Revisione della letteratura con approccio misto (ricerca sistematica e revisione concettuale). o Casi studio esplorativi per integrare i risultati della Fase 1 attraverso l’identificazione di pattern e astrazioni analitiche da un’analisi trasversale. o Workshop con esperti per ampliare ulteriormente le conoscenze derivanti dalle pratiche industriali e validare il framework concettuale proposto • Fase 2: Sviluppo del metodo SPCRM. Basandosi sui risultati della Fase 1, il rischio SPCR viene modellato e viene proposto un metodo per valutarlo e supportare le decisioni relative al trattamento del rischio secondo l’approccio di Design Science Research. • Fase 3: Sviluppo, miglioramento e applicazione pilota del metodo proposto in nell’azienda pilota Questo lavoro contribuisce alla ricerca scientifica definendo e inquadrando concettualmente lo SPCR all’interno del processo SLM e sviluppando un metodo dedicato alla sua gestione. A livello pratico, le aziende potranno comprendere meglio la natura e le componenti del rischio SPCR e fare riferimento a un metodo validato, con strumenti utili per ridurre il rischio lungo le fasi dello SLM.
