Despite growing attention to circular economy transitions, existing research has predominantly focused on technological and industrial solutions, while the role of community based collaborative consumption practices remains underexplored. This thesis investigates 3 how collaborative consumption functions as a soft infrastructure capable of reconfiguring circular value chains in the fashion and design sectors through a mechanism conceptualized as material crowdsourcing. Collaborative consumption encompasses practices enabling access, use, and circulation of material goods through sharing, exchange, reuse, and redistribution rather than individual purchase oriented toward exclusive ownership. These practices—including swap parties, informal second-hand barter markets, organized donations, and repair initiatives—occupy a space between consumption, informal welfare, and social infrastructure. Unlike digitized, commodified sharing economy models, the collaborative consumption analyzed here is characterized by local, relational, and community-based dimensions. In fashion and design, it concerns goods with high symbolic and aesthetic content, whose value incorporates identity, status, memory, and design quality beyond mere function. Collaborative consumption thus contributes to redefining the social and cultural meaning of products, not merely extending their life cycles. The term design here refers specifically to furniture and object design. Furniture generally implies longer material durability and more stable use relationships, while fashion is characterized by greater renewal frequency and seasonality. Both sectors share creative processes, supply chains, and increasing environmental responsibilities, though they differ in consumption cycle temporality. While converging in accelerated consumption logic, both sectors increasingly incorporate sustainable principles—reuse and modularity—particularly in luxury and independent segments. Both function as cultural devices producing meaning, identity, and social value. In fashion, collaborative consumption counters fast fashion’s accelerated obsolescence through reuse and exchange practices emphasizing garment durability. In design, it performs a similar function against fast furniture, favoring circulation of durable, repairable, high-quality objects. These practices affect material flows, consumption habits, property expectations, and individual-object-space relationships. Analytically, collaborative consumption is treated as a sociotechnical practice operating at the intersection of individual behaviors, event organization, and institutional contexts—a relevant 4 lever for circular economy transition through slowing material flows, reducing new production demand, and constructing supportive social infrastructures. This definition distinguishes collaborative consumption from sustainable consumption as mere individual choice and from industrial circularity models focused solely on recycling technologies. The focus remains on bottom-up practices as experimentation spaces where values, social norms, and business models can be observed, challenged, and progressively institutionalized. The research perspective is explicitly oriented toward consumers and their behaviors. The primary observation unit is practices, choices, and decision-making logics characterizing consumer interaction with fashion and design products throughout their life cycles. From observed behavior, the research inductively traces organizational implications for firms, outlining network proposals connecting companies, intermediaries, platforms, user communities, and stakeholders—overcoming linear supply chain visions toward network logic consistent with contemporary dynamics of use, reuse, and exchange. Consumer habits serve as analytical levers to rethink organizational models more sustainably. The research investigates how non-monetary exchanges function as soft infrastructure regenerating material, relational, and cultural capital. These lightweight infrastructures include regulatory frameworks, standards, institutions, skills, organizational practices, digital platforms, trust networks, and coordination mechanisms. They enable material, informational, and relational flows along supply chains, facilitating traceability, inter-organizational collaboration, and role reconfiguration between producers and consumers. The methodology combines Action Research, Engaged Scholarship, and Design Science Research, integrating literature review, European policy comparison, and empirical evidence from Italy, France, and Germany. Two original operational tools were developed across three iterative cycles: the Barter Tracker Sheet (BTS), monitoring object flows, participation, and narratives during exchange events; and the Circular Swap Dashboard (CSD), translating data into multidimensional environmental, social, and cultural indicators aligned with ESRS standards. Results demonstrate that collaborative practice success depends not only on measurable environmental impacts but also on light governance forms, mutual trust, and shared storytelling 5 as enabling infrastructures reducing coordination costs, information asymmetries, and entry barriers—favoring network structures over linear models. Theoretically, the thesis introduces material crowdsourcing, extending sharing logic typical of digital platforms to the physical world with a Systems Thinking approach. Managerially, it proposes a replicable circular coordination model applicable to companies, local administrations, and communities, useful for measuring and communicating collaborative business model benefits aligned with UN 2030 Goals (SDGs 11, 12, 13, 17). A partire dai comportamenti osservati, la ricerca ricostruisce induttivamente le implicazioni organizzative per le imprese, delineando proposte di rete che connettono aziende, intermediari, piattaforme, comunità di utenti e stakeholder, superando la tradizionale visione lineare della supply chain a favore di una logica reticolare coerente con le dinamiche contemporanee di uso, riuso e scambio. Le abitudini dei consumatori vengono utilizzate come leva analitica per ripensare modelli organizzativi più sostenibili. La ricerca esplora come gli scambi non monetari possano funzionare come soft infrastructure capaci di rigenerare capitale materiale, relazionale e culturale. Tali infrastrutture leggere comprendono quadri normativi, standard, istituzioni, competenze, pratiche organizzative, piattaforme digitali, reti di fiducia e meccanismi di coordinamento. Esse consentono la circolazione di flussi materiali, informativi e relazionali lungo le filiere, facilitando la tracciabilità, la collaborazione inter-organizzativa e la ridefinizione dei ruoli tra produttori e consumatori. La metodologia combina Action Research, Engaged Scholarship e Design Science Research, integrando revisione della letteratura, confronto tra politiche europee ed evidenze empiriche provenienti da Italia, Francia e Germania. Attraverso tre cicli iterativi sono stati sviluppati due strumenti operativi originali: il Barter Tracker Sheet (BTS), finalizzato al monitoraggio dei flussi di oggetti, della partecipazione e delle narrazioni durante gli eventi di scambio; e il Circular Swap Dashboard (CSD), che traduce tali dati in indicatori multidimensionali ambientali, sociali e culturali allineati agli standard ESRS. I risultati dimostrano che il successo delle pratiche collaborative dipende non soltanto dagli impatti ambientali misurabili, ma anche da forme di governance leggera, fiducia reciproca e narrazioni condivise che operano come infrastrutture abilitanti, riducendo i costi di coordinamento, le asimmetrie informative e le barriere all’ingresso, favorendo strutture reticolari rispetto a modelli lineari. Sul piano teorico, la tesi introduce il concetto di material crowdsourcing, estendendo al mondo fisico le logiche di condivisione tipiche delle piattaforme digitali attraverso una prospettiva di Systems Thinking. Sul piano manageriale, propone un modello replicabile di coordinamento circolare applicabile a imprese, amministrazioni locali e comunità, utile per misurare e comunicare i benefici dei modelli di business collaborativi in coerenza con gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile delle Nazioni Unite (SDG 11, 12, 13 e 17). La ricerca coniuga rigore accademico e rilevanza applicativa, offrendo un framework scalabile a supporto della transizione verso ecosistemi della moda e del design più equi, partecipativi e sostenibili.
