The Protopalatial period in Crete (1900–1700 BCE) witnessed the emergence of the First Palaces, with Phaistos representing a key site due to the richness of its preserved structures and associated ceramic contexts. This study contributes to recent Aegean research on cooking wares by analysing the Middle Minoan IB–IIB ceramics from the Phaistos Palace and its residential quarters of Haghia Photeini and Chalara, aiming to clarify their function. The research employs several analyses—morphological, diachronic, technological, use-wear, contextual, and experimental. The morphological analysis identified twelve types of cooking vessels, classified as closed, open, and fire-management tools. The study highlights differences between the Palace and its residential quarters in the distribution and composition of cooking sets, cooking practices and prepared foods, contributing to a better understanding of the social and cultural role of culinary practices in Protopalatial Crete.

Abstract
The study highlights differences between the Palace and its residential quarters in the distribution and composition of cooking sets, cooking practices and prepared foods, contributing to a better understanding of the social and cultural role of culinary practices in Protopalatial Crete.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
