Beam steering will be important to future sensing and communication systems including phased-array radar, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), free-space optical communication, and 6G wireless systems․ Conventional beam steering systems based on mechanical scanning or electronic phase shifting systems suffer from limitations such as limited speed, beam squint in broadband applications and high system complexity․ Microwave photonics (MWP) is an alternative technology for broadband signal processing in the optical domain․ Its advantages include low propagation loss and immunity to electromagnetic interference․ The rapid progress of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology provides the possibility of integrated, compact, and scalable photonic beam steering systems․ This thesis addresses the design and execution of integrated photonic beam steering, which covers a range of topics from delay-domain to phase-domain and radiation-domain beam steering․ The first part of the work presents a study of delay-domain beam steering enabled through photonic true time delay (TTD) architectures․ In this regard, programmable delay lines using phase-change material-assisted Bragg gratings are used to show the design of microwave photonic antenna arrays with time-invariant beam patterns․ The second part discusses phase domain beam steering with optical phased arrays, where the beam direction is determined by a phase gradient across all emitters that interfere constructively in a given direction․ The final focus is on radiation-domain beam steering using grating-based optical antennas, including an investigation of the potential for chirped grating coupler antennas to enable higher spectral bandwidth and beam quality over their uniform counterparts․ A careful analysis arrived at an optimal value of a chirp increment of 0․75 nm․ It provides a good compromise between bandwidth and beam focusing․ The spectral bandwidth is now 81.54 nm compared to 19.3 nm for uniform gratings․ The beam directivity can be increased by employing many antennas in parallel․ Two-dimensional beam steering is possible through wavelength-dependent radiation and by controlling the phase of the excitation․ The results show integrated photonic beam steering via combinations of true time delay beamforming, optical phased arrays, and radiation engineered grating antennas as a generalised, compact, and scalable broadband steering platform for future photonic communications and sensing systems․ Fast rise time makes CGA suitable for LiDAR applications as well.
La deflessione del fascio sarà fondamentale per i futuri sistemi di rilevamento e comunicazione, tra cui radar a schiera di fase, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), comunicazione ottica nello spazio libero e sistemi wireless 6G. I sistemi convenzionali di deflessione del fascio basati su scansione meccanica o su sistemi di sfasamento elettronico presentano limitazioni quali velocità limitata, deviazione del fascio nelle applicazioni a banda larga e elevata complessità del sistema. La fotonica a microonde (MWP) è una tecnologia alternativa per l'elaborazione di segnali a banda larga nel dominio ottico. I suoi vantaggi includono basse perdite di propagazione e immunità alle interferenze elettromagnetiche. Il rapido progresso della tecnologia dei circuiti fotonici integrati (PIC) offre la possibilità di realizzare sistemi di deflessione del fascio fotonico integrati, compatti e scalabili. Questa tesi affronta la progettazione e la realizzazione di sistemi integrati di deflessione del fascio fotonico, che coprono una vasta gamma di argomenti, dalla deflessione del fascio nel dominio del ritardo a quella nel dominio della fase e nel dominio della radiazione. Il rapido tempo di salita rende CGA adatto anche alle applicazioni LiDAR.
