The dissertation investigates the relationship between linguistic variation and gender differences in Late Medieval Italian, through the edition and linguistic analysis of a corpus of lay women’s practical writings (1350-1450), compared with contemporary maleauthored documents. The corpus consists mainly of letters from three archival collections (the Gonzaga Archive, the Datini Archive, and the Acciaioli correspondence) and includes 102 texts by women (both autograph and delegated) and 40 by men (autograph). For each archival collection, a survey of women’s writings is provided and the issue of autography is discussed (i.e. the criteria on the basis of which a document can reasonably be assumed to be written in the author’s own hand, or, conversely, to have been produced through delegated writing). Subsequently, for each woman writer the study offers brief biographical notes, a list of the documents attributed to her, a linguistic analysis of the autograph texts, and a comparison with the delegated letters (in order to assess the degree of intervention by scribes). Finally, a linguistic comparison is carried out among the women writers within each archival collection (to determine how writing competence is distributed) and with the texts written by men. The analysis thus makes it possible to outline the individual linguistic profiles of the women writers, to assess their writing competence along a continuum ranging from elementary levels to full mastery, and, in some cases, to observe internal developments over time; it also highlights whether and to what extent scribes filter the text through their own variety and intervene at the syntactic and textual levels in order to structure it more effectively. Moreover, the comparison between women’s and men’s writings, framed within a historical sociolinguistic perspective, shows that gender differences do not result in clear-cut oppositions, but interact with social, familial and geographical factors as well as with literacy practices: in sum, the relationship between language and gender was not direct, but mediated by the social structures and relations within which each writer was embedded.
