Bridges are essential components of transportation infrastructure networks, ensuring territorial connectivity and the proper functioning of mobility systems. These structures are exposed to a variety of actions of both natural and anthropogenic origin. Among them, river processes represent the leading cause of bridge collapse in Italy and worldwide. In this context, inspections constitute a fundamental tool for risk reduction and management, particularly in light of the increasing attention devoted to this issue within the Italian regulatory framework. Despite these regulatory developments, hydraulic bridge inspections are still characterized by a significant lack of standardized operational methodologies. This results in broad margins of interpretation in both the execution of inspection activities and the assessment of the observed phenomena. This thesis aims to address this gap by providing a technical manual for conducting hydraulic bridge inspections. The work is structured into two distinct parts. The first part frames hydraulic inspections from a management perspective, analysing and defining their objectives, typologies, and the technological resources available for their implementation. The second part proposes an operational protocol for carrying out inspections, encompassing both remote analysis activities and on-site field operations. The applicability of the proposed protocol is verified through real case studies, highlighting its effectiveness in supporting the interpretation of bridge–river interaction processes and in reducing the knowledge uncertainties associated with hydraulic risk assessment. At the current state of knowledge, this work provides the first comprehensive national framework for the execution of hydraulic bridge inspections, contributing to the definition of a structured and replicable methodological approach.

Abstract
At the current state of knowledge, this work provides the first comprehensive national framework for the execution of hydraulic bridge inspections, contributing to the definition of a structured and replicable methodological approach.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
