The thesis describes how the rural pre-modern architecture has changed in the last half-century and chooses Sardinia as a paradigmatic case of the Mediterranean area. In particular, the thesis describes the formal and functional evolution of the courtyard house, typical in the Sardinian rural villages. This choice meets the interest about rurality of the contemporary society, politics and economy, which see the rural world as a possible response to the issues of production, quality of life, environmental protection. On one hand the aim of the thesis is to analyze and define the phenomena of modification that has concerned the courtyard house in recent times, on the other is to propose design tools useful to govern future modifications and give a contemporary vision to the relationship between home and productive space.
