Geocultura delle identità urbane e gentrification. Il caso Belleville

This research deals with the phenomenon of gentrification, the reoccupation and the revitalization of urban centers, since the sixties, by the middle class at the expense of the working class. The thesis illustrates the various historical phases of gentrification: the origin in the United States and in England, the expansion into Europe, the current global dimension, the diversification into different shapes and scales. Then we present the theoretical debate that has polarized, since the seventies, about the clash between emancipatory city and revanchist city, or between an neo-liberal interpretation and a neo-marxist interpretation of gentrification. Finally, we analyze the case of the Parisian neighbourhood of Belleville, both as a laboratory original of public policy, both as a peculiar example of the dialectic between popular memory, multiculturalism and gentrification.

Questa ricerca si occupa del fenomeno della gentrification, ossia della rioccupazione e della rivitalizzazione dei centri urbani a partire dagli anni Sessanta, da parte della middle class a spese della working class. La tesi illustra le varie fasi storiche della gentrification: l'origine statunitense e inglese, l'espansione in Europa, l'attuale dimensione globale, il diversificarsi in forme e scale diverse. Presentiamo poi il dibattito teorico che fin dagli anni Settanta si è polarizzato nello scontro fra città emancipatoria e città revanscista, ovvero fra una interpretazione neoliberale e una interpretazione neomarxista della gentrification. Infine si analizza il caso del quartiere parigino di Belleville sia come originale laboratorio di politiche pubbliche sia come esempio peculiare di dialettica tra memoria popolare, multiculturalismo e gentrification.
