The dissertation aims to trace a cultural history of the cinematographic genre known as “film on art” or art documentary in Italy between 1948 and 1970, with reference to the wider European context, where this genre flourished from the Forties to the Sixties. It explores the theoretical debate and problems regarding the subject, production and distribution contexts, cultural institutions and film festivals devoted to the genre, the relationship with museums and artists, and eventually focuses on two authors and their films (Nino Zucchelli and Corrado Maltese). Its main purpose is to highlight the complex issues relating documentary cinema, art history and the cinematographic or mediatic representation of the cultural and artistic heritage.
La tesi intende tracciare una storia culturale del genere cinematografico noto come film sull’arte, o documentario artistico, in Italia tra 1948 e 1970, con riferimento al contesto europeo, dove questo genere fiorì tra anni Quaranta e Sessanta. Indaga il dibattito e i problemi teorici riguardanti questo soggetto, i contesti di produzione e distribuzione, le istituzioni e i festival dedicati al genere, il rapporto con musei e artisti, soffermandosi infine su due autori e i loro film (Nino Zucchelli e Corrado Maltese). L’obbiettivo principale è di mettere in luce le complesse questioni esistenti tra cinema documentario, disciplina della storia dell’arte e rappresentazione mediatica del patrimonio artistico e culturale.
