My research aims at reviewing the evidence of the ancient sicilian hellenistic and roman baths (both private and public, with a focus on the case studies of Solunto, Taormina and Tindari) through a systematic analysis which provides for the recovery of the old excavations' data and archive documents, in order to outline an archaeological framework, as complete as possible, on the transformation of the “bathing culture” in the island. As highlighted by YEGÜL 2010, in the preface of his book, the connection between the act and its architectural setting is inseparable and the different functions of bathing forms- designed, starting from the Hellenistic period, not only for the hygienic and healthy practices, but increasingly for moments of relaxation and pleasure- will also allow us to study the social and cultural habit of bathing and to seize a further aspect of the transformation from Greek to Roman Sicily.

Abstract
My research aims at reviewing the evidence of the ancient sicilian hellenistic and roman baths (both private and public, with a focus on the case studies of Solunto, Taormina and Tindari) through a systematic analysis which provides for the recovery of the old excavations' data and archive documents, in order to outline an archaeological framework, as complete as possible, on the transformation of the “bathing culture” in the island. As highlighted by YEGÜL 2010, in the preface of his book, the connection between the act and its architectural setting is inseparable and the different functions of bathing forms- designed, starting from the Hellenistic period, not only for the hygienic and healthy practices, but increasingly for moments of relaxation and pleasure- will also allow us to study the social and cultural habit of bathing and to seize a further aspect of the transformation from Greek to Roman Sicily.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
