This thesis aims to show how literary texts can promote intercultural competence. As foreign language classrooms become more multicultural, foreign language teaching practices should reflect this trend by promoting cultural understanding. Literary texts may offer learners opportunities to develop critical reading skills that help them understand other cultures. The approach presented here wants to work with literature by offering specific tasks directed to develop the intercultural competence. The first part of the work tries to explain the components of the intercultural approach (goals, methods, contents). The second part describes a teaching project based on eleven didactic units. Each unit is focused on a literary text written by an author of the intercultural German literature.
