This study aims to examine the activity of Reuters and AFP in the People's Republic of China (PRC) during the Maoist era (1954-1979). The analysis seeks to formulate an answer to the following question: how did European news agencies and their Peking correspondents contribute to the development of Sino-European relations? The research supports the idea that Reuters and AFP had an influential role in the Sino-European rapprochement. Both news agencies not only played a part in shaping people’s perception of Chinese politics and society through international reporting, but also played a pivotal role in the evolution of cultural, economic and political relations between the PRC and their home countries. In addition, the research sheds light on the role of news agencies in shaping foreign policy and international relations, paving the way for later studies.
