The purpose of this research is to reconstruct the evolution of the doctrine of the perception elaborated by the American philosopher Hilary Putnam. More precisely, I will try to retrace some important turning points in Putnam's philosophical journey, in particular his oscillations between externalism and internalism in the debate about realism and between functionalism, materialism and antireductionism in the mind-body debate, highlighting each time the role played by the doctrine of perception in these delicate passages. In my opinion, reread Putnam following the common thread of the theme of perception will be an opportunity both to trace elements of continuity within his frequent changes of position and to provide a new interpretation to understand those changes themselves.
