The aim of the research is to analyze the effects of the Venetian military apparatus on the economy of the Venetian rural communities between XVI and XVII centuries. Particular attention is posed on the revenues obtained from the management of the military apparatus, until now not considered by the Venetian historiography. The analysis of the expenses too (and their management) constitutes an important part of the thesis. The aim is to understand the complexity of the local economic circuit linked with the military apparatus (in its wider meaning), underlining the role played by local institutions and by the members of the communities. The case studies are communities in the provinces of Brescia and Vicenza, because their differences and the high comparative potential. Books of expenditures and decisions taken by the local councils are the main sources, allowing identifying various secondary costs, that are not present in the state documents. This kind of sources is useful in order to understand if the expenses were redistributed within the communities and to identify who were the recipients. The wide period considered allows to include in the analysis periods of war and peace, in a general context of modernization of the Venetian defensive apparatus.
