The thesis is the result of an ethnographic research carried out in several phases in the Western Region of Ghana (Nzema area). It deals with the local practices and rhetorics of the history promoted by traditional leaders in the frame of economic and social changes occurred in the area within the last few years. It aims at analyzing the complex interactions between oral and archival sources in outlining the historical scenario, stressing the agency of chiefs (traditional leaders) in history and heritage-making processes.

Abstract
