The subject of this thesis is the diplomatic relation between the Republic of Venice and the Dutch republic during the first half of the 17th century. The first two chapters of the thesis are devoted to the analysis of the binding between the production of diplomatic documents and the use of a republican discourse in the peculiar political context of the early 17th century. The first chapter focuses on the very first diplomatic approach between the two republics and the role of that the republican myth had in it. In the second chapter is described the progressive reshaping of the diplomatic relations between Venice and the Dutch republic while the use of the republican historical myth kept on being present as cultural link between them. The third and fourth chapters are dedicated to the diplomatic connection of the two republics at the courts of Pars, London and Constantinople in the context of the Thirty Years War. IN the last chapter is analyzed the way in which the early modern governments used the diplomatic ceremonials as a form of political legitimation within the international community with a keen eye on the confrontation between the Dutch Republic and the Republic of Venice.
