This work focuses on Javier Egea (1952-1999), a Granada poet who was among the founders of the poetic group “La otra sentimentalidad”. It is divided into five chapters and an appendix. The first chapter gives an overview of the political and cultural situation in Spain from 1962 onwards, mapping the slow but significant changes in Franco’s regime which led to a progressive opening towards foreign influences. The second chapter takes into consideration the same period, but at a local level, exploring the Transition period in the town of Granada, with special reference to the poetics of “La otra sentimentalidad” in the early 1980s and to its subsequent dilution into the broader “Poetry of experience” movement. The third and the following chapters are centred on Javier Egea: chapter three offers a biographical account and a detailed commentary of his works, both published and unpublished, whereas chapter four undertakes a transversal analysis of his work according to some critical perspectives, i.e. thematology, intertextuality, the construction of the lyrical subject, metrics etc. Finally, the last chapter compares a few current critical approaches to Egea’s poetry and suggests it can be read by adopting a wider critical perspective than what materialist critique has offered. It takes into account critical inputs from related fields and emphasises the stylistic features and the literary quality of Egea’s work in relation to Spanish tradition. Furthermore, the chapter tries to draw a balance of the development of Egea’s poetry within the Spanish literary trends of the last thirty years of the 20th century. Lastly, the appendix contains the transcription of three interviews made by the thesis’ author with Juan Carlos Rodríguez, Álvaro Salvador y Luis García Montero, marxist theoretician and fellow poets respectively, with whom Javier Egea created the literary movement known as “La otra sentimentalidad”.
