Analysing and teaching the interactions between aspect, Aktionsart and verb polysemy in Croatian

What is verbal aspect? What is meant by Aktionsart? How are these concepts intertwined in Croatian aspectual verb pairs and is there a way to represent their interaction? After providing a detailed introduction to the Croatian language and a comprehensive account of both aspect and Aktionsart in Western and in Slavic literature, the CroaTPAS resource (Croatian Typed Predicate Argument Structures) is used as testing ground to compare the meaning inventories of a selection of Croatian verb pairs and to study of the interaction between aspect and Aktionsart using the formalism of event structures. CroaTPAS is a corpus-based semantic resource containing 180 verb entries, which was tailored-made to portray verb polysemy. Its online interface is available at the address https://croatpas.baisa.cz/, which is one of the deliverables of the project. The resource was also successfully used to introduce the topic of aspectual verb pairs to a beginners’ group taking part in a 30-hour Croatian language intensive course, which is the focus of the last Chapter of the dissertation.
