The Doctorate thesis analyses the relationship between writer's reportage and politics in the second half of the Twentieth century, focusing on Italian authors and on the comparison of political-social and cultural models between the country of departure (Italy) and the country of arrival. The authors studied were those who considered reportage as the primary objective of the journey - underlying a component of voluntariness, risk and information - and who confronted themselves directly with the elsewhere, almost in a hand-to-hand way (and not only as an opportunity to bring back a visa, but as a starting point for personal reflection). The research includes writers for whom reportage is not merely collateral writing but an integral part of their work, of equal dignity compared to the rest of their work (poetic-narrative or critical writings), and who have produced such writings while travelling outside of Italy. Moving on to the authors identified as case studies, these are: Italo Calvino, Franco Fortini and Goffredo Parise. The analysis of their reportages and their comparison have proved fruitful, especially in the comparison of political, social and cultural models, such as communism (think of China and Russia) and capitalism (American, in particular), in light of issues such as self-representation, the relationship with truth and fiction, with their own time, convenience and inconvenience.
